Innovative Projects and Engaging Workshops
Explore a showcase of past projects and workshops that highlight creativity and innovation in electronics.
From interactive games to hands-on soldering sessions, these initiatives inspire learning and experimentation. Dive into these stories and see how technology brings ideas to life!
1. Singapore Arduino – SGuino
SGuino was a significant milestone in the Singapore Maker movement as it was the first Singapore-made Arduino-compatible microcontroller board. It was officially launched and showcased at CommunicAsia 2014 by IDA Labs.
The SGuino was developed as a collaboration between IDA Labs and 3E Gadgets Pte. Ltd. This Arduino compatible board makes it easy for children and young Makers to start tinkering with computer programming and electronics.

The video shows SGuino playing the tune ‘Do, Re, Mi’ and so on. While playing tunes, the servo turns and external LED lights up. On-board blue Indicator LEDs light up synchronous with the external LEDs. These indicators play an important role in program testing and verification, especially when there are no external LEDs connected.

Features that are unique to the SGuino include four built-in push buttons that could, for example, be used as the “Left, Right, Up and Down” buttons for applications. A built-in piezoelectric buzzer can be used to play music. Eight ‘Enhanced Outputs’ can be connected directly to drive 12V LEDs. These outputs come with individual indicator LEDs to facilitate programming in the absence of external connections.
At the CommunicAsia 2014 Summit on 18 June 2014, IDA’s Executive Deputy Chairman, Mr Steve Leonard, presented his opening keynote speech titled “Smart Nation: Innovating for a new experience”. He talks about Singapore’s Smart Nation vision. Singapore is trying to think about how to be great at exploring and experimenting and building. As one of the ways to help the younger generation build technologies, IDA leverages the popular Arduino platform.

2. Interactive Retail Showcase at Changi Airport
A customised electronic controller is at the heart of this interactive system. The system invites passers-by to step forward and interact with them by detecting button-press (round & red button), presence of participant’s hands and playback the appropriate video at the right moment.

3. Re-Wire Interactive Game at the Singapore Science Centre
Re-Wire was a customised interactive game for the Singapore Science Centre that illustrates how the brain functions. Participants learn about the concept of pruning and reinforcement in the brain through playing this game.
4. Electronic Soldering Workshop
The hands-on workshop equips learners with knowledge on electronic soldering. Every learner gets to bring home the electronic circuit that they practice soldering on. In this particular workshop, the circuit is a Blinky badge which consists of 2 giant LEDs that blink alternatively, also known as a ‘Flip-Flop’ circuit.
