This is a breakout board for the MAX485 RS-485 transceiver IC, which will convert a UART serial stream to RS-485.
RS485 is a half dulpex communication transciever. This breakout boards comes with a terminal screw block for connections to A, B and GND. It also comes with the flexibility to have a jumper solder at the side for other connections.
If you do not want to use the terminal blocks, you could also de-solder and remove the terminal block and replace it with a RJ45 connector. The PCB is design with the option of using RJ45 connectors too!
Hint: If you want to have full-duplex communication. You should explore using 2 of these boards to configure it as RS422.
The following shows how an Arduino can be connected to the breakout board.
Transmit (eg A2) RX-I
Receive (eg A3) TX-O
Send Enable (eg D2) RTS
The SoftwareSerial library is used in this case.
The pin A2 & A3 are configured respectively as the Data Transmit & Receive pin.
Before sending data, set pin D2 to HIGH logic level.
Then send data using pin A2. When done, set D2 back to LOW logic level.
